Emmanuel

"Thou who wast rich beyond all splendour, All for love’s sake becamest poor; Thrones for a manger didst surrender, Sapphire-paved courts for stable floor.

Thou who wast rich beyond all splendour,

All for love’s sake becamest poor."

And so it has begun. Christmas is upon us, and it here that we are often faced with reflection on the past-be it the year, the years, or the ages.

Some of us ponder Christmases past. In designing and brainstorming, I have thought to myself, if fraktur artists had more supplies, more time, what would their Christmas decorations have looked like? This was inspiration for this year's Christmas items. So I kept mine simple, but festive, with a touch of myself. For I am not out to copy the old, but bring the old along with me into the new. The result has been ornaments, Christmas frakturs, and new Christmas cards.

But also I have considered the very first Christmas. Its themes run deep in my Christmas items. Emmanuel. God with us. Such an overwhelming yet dear thought. How tightly I wish to cling it. The God of the universe who traded splendor for soil, heaven for earth, that we might be called His own.

May you be inspired by the season, and by my humble efforts to point to the God from whom my gifts are given.

"Thou who art love beyond all telling, Saviour and King, we worship thee. Emmanuel, within us dwelling, Make us what thou wouldst have us be. Thou who art love beyond all telling, Saviour and King, we worship thee.”

-FRANK HOUGHTON

Merry Christmas!
